Friday, February 27th, 2009

Here is this week’s edition for TV on DVD Releases in the animated/kids category.

Chowder Volume 2 - This is the second release of episodes from Chowder. This has only 5 episodes of the show, but that about as much as can be expected from kid’s TV on DVD releases these days. It contains episodes 6 through 10, so at least they seem to be releasing the episodes in order.

Chowder Volume 2

Franny’s Feet Princess Franny - This release is of a few episodes of the show about a girl’s whose feet take her on magical adventures. I assume the adventures in this release at least include one related to her being a princess. It has a run time of around 60 minutes, so perhaps 3 episodes.

Max and Ruby: Bunny Hop into Spring - This is a three disc set. It includes Berry Bunny Adventures, Springtime for Max & Ruby, and Easter with Max & Ruby.

Pucca: Sooga Super Squad - I think this release has four episodes of the show. The special features include Color Your Own Cover Activity and Pucca Animatics.

Rick and Steve: The Complete Second Season - This is an adult animated comedy show that originally aired on MTV, but I think it also airs as reruns on LOGO.

Sesame Street: Elmo & Friends: Tales of Adventure - This release contains three stories. They are “Elmo’s Amazing Alphabet Race,” “The Adventures of Little Big Bird”, and “The Golden Triangle of Destiny” (this one is Indiana Jones-ish).

60 Minutes World of Trouble - This is an Amazon DVD print on demand release of one of the 12 minute segments from the February 15, 2009 episode of 60 Minutes. This segment is about World Savings and the economic crisis ruining them or something like that.

60 Minutes “Buy American” - This is another 12 minute segment from the February 15, 2009, episode. This segment is about the Nucor Steel company lobbing for the buy American clause in the economic stimulus package and the possibility of other countries blocking American goods.

Body in Numbers - This is a Discovery Channel documentary with a subtitle of Life’s Mysteries Decoded.

NFL Super Bowl XLIII: Pittsburgh Steelers Champions - The DVD version of this came out on February 24, 2009. On March 3, 2009 the Blu-Ray version is being released as an Amazon exclusive. This is a highlight reel of the Steelers season leading up and through winning the Super Bowl XLIII. It includes high definition footage of the entire 4th quarter of the Week 14 game vs. the Cowboys.

NFL Super Bowl XLIII: Pittsburgh Steelers Champions

Ocean Animal Emergency - This is a NOVA documentary about sea animal emergencies and rescuing them.

Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares - This is a two disc set. The special features include production notes and a biography of Gordon Ramsey. I think this is Series 1 of the show, which has been released on DVD before as part of Volume 1 of the show, but that seems to be no longer available.

February 24, 2009 TV on DVD Releases: Reality and Documentary

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Here is this week’s edition for TV on DVD Releases in the reality and documentary categories.

60 Minutes Coldplay - This release is a 12 minute segment from the February 8, 2009 episode of 60 Minutes.

60 Minutes Saving Flight 1549 - This release is a 12 minute segment from the February 8, 2009, episode of 60 Minutes.

The Best of the Flatt and Scruggs TV Show Volume 7 and 8 - This includes live performances of the country/bluegrass band. It sounds like it might be never before seen footage, but the description might just mean it is the first time on DVD. Either way the footage is from the 1950s and 1960s. By the way the volumes are two separate releases coming out on the same release date.

The Brain - This is a History Channel documentary about the human brain. It includes some state of the art CGI animation.

Cities of the Underworld: The Complete Season Two - This release contains the second season of the History Channel show that looks at the hidden things beneath cities, such as Washington, D.C., Dublin, Berlin, and Moscow.

Conspiracy? - This contains the 13 episode series about various conspiracy theories.

Dirty Jobs Collection 4 - This is a three disc set of the Discovery Channel show about jobs you get dirty doing. To go with this release I also noticed Amazon has a set of collections 1 through 4 for cheaper than if you bought each collection separately.

Dirty Jobs Collection 4

Einstein: The Real Story of the Man Behind the Theory - This is a History Channel documentary about Einstein.

Fight Quest - This release is a three disc set.

February 24, 2009 TV on DVD Releases: Drama

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Here is this week’s edition for TV on DVD Releases in the drama category.

Breaking Bad The Complete First Season - I had never heard of this series before reading about it being released on DVD, but it sounds pretty interesting. It is about a man that finds out he has cancer and his family, which includes a teenager with cerebral palsy. The man turns to a life of crime to support his family before dying.

Canterbury’s Law: The Complete Series - This is a two disc set that contains the whole series. It was a mid season legal drama show in 2008 that was canceled soon after it finished.

Enemy at the Door Set 1 - This is a British series about the Nazi German invasion of the British Channel Islands in 1940.

The Lair : Season 2 - This is a vampire show of some sort, I think.

The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice - This is the DVD release of the TNT made for television movie. It sounds like the movie is kind of Indiana Jones- like with the coveted item being Judas’ Chalice.

The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice

Oliver Twist - This is a BBC version of the classic Dickens story. From the Amazon reviews it appears this is not a very good interpretation of the book. I believe it is the 2007 version and the 2005 version was supposedly off, but not as off as this version. It seems the 1985 version is the most recommended.

Painted Lady - This was originally shown as a Masterpiece Theater movie. The special features include a biography of Helen Mirren.

February 24, 2009 TV on DVD Releases: Animated

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

Here is this week’s edition for TV on DVD Releases in the animated/kids category.

Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder - This is a feature length film of the animated adult show, Futurama. It sounds like is loosely connected 4 episodes that would stand better on their own than slapped together to make it be a film or at least that it the gist I got from the Amazon reviews. It is also being released in a Blu-Ray version. There is also a Futurama movie collection set on Amazon that includes this newest release.

Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder

Maria Watches Over Us Season 3 DVD Collection - This release of a Japanese anime show. The third season contains 5 episodes and 5 specials.

The Mighty B!: We Got the Bee - This is the first DVD release of the Nickelodeon show, The Mighty B!. This release probably contains 4 episodes of the show. The special features include the “Behind the Mighty B!” featurette, the original animatic of one of the episodes, and a Karaoke music video.

The Wiggles Present: Dorothy the Dinosaur - This release is about 1 hour and 30 minutes of The Wiggles.

Wonder Pets!: Join the Circus - This release contains a few episodes of the Nick Jr. Wonder Pets! show. It includes a double length episode called “Join the Circus” that has not yet been shown on television. I think that special is supposed to air in March 2009 on Nick Jr probably as a prime time episode, but in the meantime it might be fun to see it on the DVD first. From the review I read it sounds pretty good at least for fans of the show.

Wonder Pets!: Big Missions, Little Heroes! - This release is a 3 DVD collection. It includes the Join the Circus release as well as Save the Wonder Pets, and Save the Bengal Tiger.

February 24, 2009 TV on DVD Releases: Comedy

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

Here is this week’s edition for TV on DVD Releases in the comedy category.

Girlfriends: The Sixth Season - This release is a 3 disc set of the sixth season of the show.

Just Shoot Me: The Complete 3rd Season - This is a 3 disc set with the 25 episodes of the third season show about the office going ons of Blush magazine. I remember this being a pretty decent comedy show.

My Wife & Kids: Season 1 - Wow, I am surprised this show was not already on DVD. I am also surprised the first season is short enough to fit on one disc, but I guess it had a short first season because it was a mid season pilot show.

The Red Green Show: 2001 Season - I honestly have no idea what this show is about besides I think it is comedy. The DVD has a special feature of production notes written by the series creator, Steve Smith.

Summer Heights High - This is an Australian high school comedy series that I think has also been shown on HBO.

Summer Heights High

February 24, 2009 TV on DVD Releases: Sports

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

Here is this week’s edition for TV on DVD Releases in the sports category.

The 2009 Rose Bowl Game - This release is of the 2009 Rose Bowl Game. I am not sure if it is the entire game as broadcasted or just some sort of highlight type DVD release of the game.

NFL Super Bowl XLIII: Pittsburgh Steelers Champions DVD - This DVD release is about the Super XLIII game in which the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Arizona Cardinals. It follows the Pittsburgh Steelers from the beginning of the season through the Super Bowl win. It includes action highlights, sideline footage, and locker room footage from of the Pittsburgh Steelers season. This release is not the whole game, which would be a much better release, but it still might me a fun DVD for football/Steelers fans.

CSI Season 1 Disc 5 Wrap Up

Friday, February 20th, 2009

This week’s TV on DVD Season I am going through and doing wrap ups of is the six disc CSI Season 1 set. I will be posting about one disc each day until this Saturday. Today’s post is a wrap up of the episodes on disc 5.

CSI Season 1

“Face Lift” - In the beginning of this episode a man is found dead after a robbery and appears to be related to the robbery. One of the fingerprints found in the shop that was robbed matches a 21 year old missing person’s case. Warrick and Sara work a case involving a burnt body. The daughter of the man murdered while robbing the store ends up having been there trying to stop him from committing the robbery crime. Sara thinks that the burnt body spontaneously combusted or at least wants to think that is what happened. It turns out the missing person is the girl raised as the daughter of the man found dead at the robbery. Uranium is found as part of the murder weapon that killed the man, which is something found in older dyes. Nick then tries to find the actual murder weapon at the pottery store that was robbed. Warrick and Sara experiment on a pig to prove his theory that it was a cigarette that burned the body and not spontaneous combustion. It turns out that the woman that was kidnapped 21 years ago and raised by her kidnappers has a split personality and believes Melissa (her real name) killed her kidnapper (who she believes is her father). It turns out that she is lying about the split personality, though.

CSI Season 1

“Boom” - In the beginning of this episode a bomb explodes in a lobby killing a security guard and injuring a few others. Nick ends up helping the hooker Christine for the third time this season. He gives her a ride home and she asks him in for a drink. Grissom ends up having the security guard that had just left before the bomb went off help them figure out who set the bomb even though he kind of suspects him. Nick is about to meet up with Christine to grab a bite to eat, but instead finds out she is dead. He is somewhat of a suspect because his fingerprints and DNA are at her house because he had sex with her the night before. Warrick tries to figure out what tool engraved the FP on part of the bomb while Sara and Grissom blow up bombs to find out what type of pipe was used. They end up arresting the security guard, although they do not quite believe he is guilty. They free him when a second bomb goes off and proves he could not have done it. The guy Nick had rescued Christine from ends up saying he saw Nick being violent. Catherine works the case for 12 hours to try to prevent Nick from being arrested for the murder. In the bomb case they arrest a disgruntled former employee of Thrift Rite, which was connected to both bomb locations. Catherine finds the murder weapon and matches the DNA on it to the guy that said he saw Nick kill her. It turns out the disgruntled former employee’s son planted the bombs and in the end the other security guard dies trying to take the last bomb out of a school.

Nick, Warrick, and Sara then show up to continue working the scene. During the autopsy it is revealed that the man has defensive wounds, aggressive wounds, signs of suffocation, and a shoe print on his neck. Grissom and Sara find body fluids in the lavatory suggesting some people had sex in the lavatory, which leads to an odd conversation between them ending with Sara revealing the details of doing it herself. They take three of the first class passengers because their shoes matched the prints on the victim’s coat. One of the key witnesses ends up being a legally blind man in the first row. It turns out that the man went crazy because he had brain swelling and that it could have killed him, but so could the beatings he got from the other passengers. They recreate the incident and decide it was mostly self defense, but they went too far and killed them as a mob in the end. However, in the end they all went free despite Grissom wanting them put on trial.
