The Best Years Season 1 Disc 2 Wrap Up

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

This week’s TV on DVD Season I am going through and doing wrap ups of is the four disc The Best Years Season 1 set, as sort of a countdown to the premiere of the second season on The N on Friday, April 3, 2009. I will be posting about one disc each day until this Thursday. Today’s wrap up is of disc 2.

The Best Years Season 1

“Secrets and Lies” - Halloween is approaching in this episode. Samantha ends up having to take her floor mate, Cynthia, drunk from the Colony and vouch for her when her parents show up. The owner of the colony (friend of Dawn’s) ends up being in a down mood possibly from a break up and Dawn tries to set him up with Noah, who she thinks might be gay, but at least at this time he does admit to it. Samantha convinces the owner to let her out of her shift to hang with Devon on Halloween at Freak Fest, as it is like the only holiday a orphan can enjoy. She ends up having to choose between telling Cynthia that she cannot go with her to Freak Fest because she is going with Devon and being a bad friend or telling Devon that Cynthia is coming along and being a bad girlfriend. She ends up telling Cynthia to go with Noah. It turns out that Cynthia is an alcoholic and it seems the night at the colony was a relapse. Devon and Samantha go to Freak Fest as Ketchup and Mustard. Cynthia shows up as Relish and messes up their date. The owner of the Colony’s mood ends up being about him being HIV positive. Cynthia gets ready to jump from her dorm room window. Samantha talks her back inside. The show’s drama is good, but the whole second person about to die by falling from the dorm is a little redundant so soon even if it has a different outcome.

The Best Years Season 1 Disc 1 Wrap Up

Monday, March 30th, 2009

This week’s TV on DVD Season I am going through and doing wrap ups of is the four disc The Best Years Season 1 set, as sort of a countdown to the premiere of the second season on The N on Friday, April 3, 2009. I will be posting about one disc each day until this Thursday. Today’s wrap up is of disc 1.

The Best Years Season 1

“Vertigo” - This episode begins with a girl narrating that the ticking represents her past 10 years in foster homes and is now a countdown to her life now being up to her. She runs down a sidewalk to catch a bus going to Charles University in Boston. When she gets off the bus Samantha is greeted by the dean of admissions. The dean shows her to her room in McDonald Hall and she learns that she has to get a meal plan to stay, which costs $4,000 and her academic scholarship only covers tuition. Samantha meets Devon, a star basketball player, when he runs into her while riding his skateboard. She meets Devon again in the co-ed showers, which she did not realize they were until this awkward encounter. Samantha then finally meets her roommate, Kathryn. Dawn Vargas, a former child star, also lives in their dorm. Samantha has a hard time telling the truth of her background even to her roommate. She eventually tells her roommate that her parents are dead and she does not have anyone to call to work things out. Kathryn ends up lending her her meal plan. Together they go clubbing and end up meeting Devon there, who has a crush on Samantha. They get turned away from the club due to fake ids and end up getting liquor and end up back at the dorm wasted and drinking on the dorm roof. While drinking on the roof one of their friends, John the football player, falls off the roof. They end up arguing over what to do about the incident to keep themselves from getting in trouble even though it was an accident. They end up just leaving the scene and letting it be assumed that he jumped from the roof. Samantha ends up coming forward about what happened that night to the dean. She is told the review of the incident will likely lead to loss of scholarship and even being expelled. Crying in the bathroom she runs into Dawn and they become friends. It kind of seems like she will be expelled, but then I never really believed she would, as then there would be no point of the series. Now that she is friends with Dawn they easily get into Colony, the club they were turned away at before. She does not go with her roommate, though, as they are kind of fighting over the incident with John, and instead she begins her friendship with another woman in their dorm. Samantha does not end up even losing her scholarship because the woman that donates the university that included funding Samantha’s scholarship says she will pull all her funding of the university if charges are brought against Samantha.

TV on DVD Review: The Best Years Season 1

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

The Best Years Season 1I tend to be a fan of the N shows and I will admit I still like watching Degrassi. I tend to miss the shows on the channel as new episodes and often only get around to seeing the repeats. One of the shows I have totally missed was The Best Years. The show’s first season was released on DVD earlier this month and I was honored to get a copy of it to review.

The first season of the show consists of 13 episodes that follow the first semester of Samantha, an orphan, going to Charles University in Boston. It follows the drama of college from romance to dorm life to sororities. Pretty much every character has some drama to them. There is Dawn the former star of a Degrassi-like show coping with having a real life for the first time. There is the star athlete Devon dealing with his mostly one sided love for Samantha and his jealousy of not always having her. There is Samantha’s roommate, Kathryn, at university in part to find a rich husband and along the way gets into some scandalous situations. There is Noah, Devon’s roommate and a foreigner from Canada, who ends up in an affair with a professor. There is Trent, who is a fifth year junior, dealing with trying to be monogamous and kick addictions. Then there is the drama of John in the first episode and the drama of Cynthia that dissipates unresolved sort of early in the season. Of course, Samantha has a lot of drama situations herself, which includes a past family member coming back into her life and discovering the real motive behind the scholarship she was awarded.

Overall I really enjoyed watching this show. It has a lot of drama and is kind of in the extreme like Degrassi can be, but then again the lack of the extreme drama would not make it so interesting. There are a few plot lines that really make it seem overboard, especially the plot with Cynthia about to jump and kill herself and then Samantha convincing her not to and then Cynthia basically disappearing from the series. It just seemed like unnecessary drama to be introduced so early in the show and then not really resolved. Mostly, though, the drama makes the show and while it is very concentrated (i.e. more drama than realistic happens to the main cast) the plot lines are for the most part regular college drama with the exception of the plot line of Samantha and her birth mother and scholarship sponsor. That plot line is still kind of realistic and really a big part of making the show interesting, so I do think it belongs.

The show itself makes the DVD release worthwhile, especially with it offering over 10 hours of entertainment. It is, however, a little disappointing with it saying it has over 70 minutes of bonus features and the features ended up being pretty boring and mostly just the cast auditions, which yet interesting really does not make it seem worth boasting about the bonus feature length on the box. Basically, in my opinion any TV on DVD release is incomplete without an audio commentary of at least one episode and this release lacks that.

The show was originally canceled after its first season, but after a bit of a delay it was picked back up for a second season. The second season will be premiering on the N this Friday, April 3, 2009. If it was not for noticing the DVD release, then I would not have even known about it premiering next week and I also would not know enough about the show to be interested in watching. Now that I have seen the first season I am looking forward to the second season and have it set up to record on my DVR.

March 31, 2009 TV on DVD Releases: Animated

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

Here is this week’s edition for TV on DVD Releases in the animated category.

D. Gray-Man: Season One, Part One - This release is a two disc set.

Go Diego Go!: Rainforest Fiesta - This release contains four episodes of Go, Diego, Go!. The episodes are “Diego and Porcupine Save the Pinata,” “A New Flamingo Mami,” “Macky the Macaroni Penguin,” and “Linda the Llama Saves Carnaval.” The special features include a DVD game.

Negima!? Season 2, Part 2 - This is a two disc uncut set.

One Piece: Season One, Fourth Voyage - This release contains episodes 40 through 53 of the show.

The Real Ghostbusters Volume 1 - The use of the word volume often means a limited release for an animated show, but this is a five disc release that even includes about three hours of bonus material.

Schoolhouse Rock: Earth - This release features 11 all new songs about the Earth and conservation.

Strawberry Shortcake: Berry Big Journey - The latest Strawberry Shortcake adventure arrives on March 31, 2009. I am a fan of the show, but I will admit that the last Big Country Fun one kind of disappointed me and it seems the show has lost touch with its origins with it trying too hard to become more modern feeling. It seems Strawberry got too teenage drama annoyish in that release, but I did not totally hate it either. This one does pique my interest in that Strawberry and friends go on around the world in 80 days supposedly as a road trip.

Strawberry Shortcake: Berry Big Journey

Thomas & Friends: High Speed Adventures - This release contains six Thomas & Friends stories.

Tokyo Majin: Season One, Part Two - This release is 2 disc set of a Japanese anime show.

The Wallflower: The Complete Collection, Part Two - This is a two disc set of another Japanese Anime show.

Commander in Chief Inaugural Edition Part 2 Disc 4 Wrap Up

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

This week’s TV on DVD Season I am going through and doing wrap ups of is the two part Season 1/Inaugural Edition of the Commander in Chief series, which ended up canceled after the first season. Today’s wrap up is of the final disc, Part 2 Disc 4, which has three episodes and some bonus features.

Commander in Chief Inaugural Edition Part 1

“The Elephant in the Room” - The President is sick in this episode. Their is an airline pilot strike. The President has appendicitis and invokes the 25th Amendment. Since the Vice President resigned in the previous episode, Templeton was next in line as the temporary or permanent successor. They expected him to resign as Speaker of the House and allow the Senate Pro Temp to be President. Instead Templeton decides to take this opportunity to resign from the House, as it works well for his campaigning for the next Presidential election, especially since he can still remain Speaker even if he is no longer a voting representative in the House. The President’s surgery has some drama moments that seem kind of tacky and overdramatic for this show. As President, Templeton negotiates the pilot strike to end by calling a special Congress session. When the President resumes office she makes it clear to Templeton that she disapproved of how he mandated the end of the strike and feels that one of the best reason to run for President is to keep him out of office.

Commander in Chief Inaugural Edition Part 2 Disc 3 Wrap Up

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

This week’s TV on DVD Season I am going through and doing wrap ups of is the two part Season 1/Inaugural Edition of the Commander in Chief series, which ended up canceled after the first season. Today’s wrap up is of Part 2 Disc 3. It might seem odd, but really the first disc in part 2 is labeled disc 3, as it basically is disc 3 of season 1 and it actually concludes a two part episode arc that had the first part on Part 1 Disc 2.

Commander in Chief Inaugural Edition Part 1

“No Nukes is Good Nukes” - The North Koreans are preparing to fight war, as they say that the submarine being in North Korean waters was a purposeful act of war. They call in a professor that is an expert on the North Koreans. Mrs. Templeton goes to Templeton’s chief of staff, Jane, and tries to convince her to come back, as Templeton is not good at apologizing, but really wants her working for him again. Templeton and the President try to get the Chinese to let them use their underwater rescue system. They end up negotiating to use it covertly as if it was an entirely American operation. The Koreans hit a plane and there is pressure to counterstrike. There is some talk of having the submarine blow itself up, but neither the President and Templeton agree to that, which leads to a rare time the two of them support the same idea and defend it together against the others who think they submarine should be destroyed and rescue efforts of minimal chance abandoned. Jane ends up going to Templeton and apologizes for betraying him and he gladly welcomes her back. The President tells North Korea that if the Koreans attack the rescue vessels they will retaliate with the full force of the United States military, but if they do not they will give them $500 million for “humanitarian aid” with no strings attached. As Templeton, the President, and the First Gentleman wait to see what happens they say a prayer. The North Koreans want her to apologize for the sub being in their waters and she agrees to do so if the crew is safely rescued without being fired on by the Koreans. In the end the rescue is peacefully played out and she does apologize. Templeton begins to realize that she is good for the country and that she will be hard to beat in the election while the President tells her close staff that she really wants to run for President.

Commander in Chief Inaugural Edition Part 1 Disc 2 Wrap Up

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

This week’s TV on DVD Season I am going through and doing wrap ups of is the two part Season 1/Inaugural Edition of the Commander in Chief series, which ended up canceled after the first season. Today’s wrap up is of Part 1 Disc 2.

Commander in Chief Inaugural Edition Part 1

“First Disaster” - This episode begins with the President being on Air Force One with the Speaker of the House Templeton on their way to Florida where a hurricane recently hit. Templeton’s family home was destroyed in the hurricane. Templeton and the President then hand out water and food to those in need. The hurricane caused damage to a super tanker and the oil leaking could blanket the east coast. Meanwhile the First Gentleman continues to consider the job of Commissioner of Baseball, as part of considering the job he and Horace play some leisure ball with the Baltimore Orioles. The press secretary accidentally tells the President about him considering the job before he told her. The issue of the oil tanker quickly puts Templeton and Mackenzie against each other again with him not wanting them to let the tanker come to port in Florida right after the hurricane disaster. Rebecca convinces her secret service agent to give her ten minutes alone in public with the same guy she was caught kissing in a previous episode. The situation quickly turns ugly with a bunch of people coming around her and she presses her panic button and her agent rushes her out of the situation. The First Gentleman ends up requesting the agent be transferred for allowing the incident to occur. In the end the ship is brought in safely to a military base in Florida and the First Gentleman takes the job as Commissioner of Baseball.

Here is this week’s edition for TV on DVD Releases in the documentary/reality category.

60 Minutes Eyewitness - This Amazon on demand DVD release is of a segment from the March 8, 2009, episode of 60 Minutes. This segment is about how eyewitnesses are not always right. It uses an example of a 1984 rape case that sent an innocent man to jail for 11 years until DNA evidence proved his innocence.

60 Minutes Your Bank Has Failed - This is another segment from the March 8, 2009 episode of 60 Minutes. This segment is about what happens when banks fail and how the FDIC steps in.

Best Evidence - This release is of six episodes of Investigation Discovery looking into controversial mysteries. The episodes include “TWA Flight 800,” “Big Foot,” “Chemical Contrails,” “John Wayne’s Death,” “The Roswell Incident,” and “Cattle Mutilations.”

The Very Best of Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan

Commander in Chief: The Inaugural Edition Part 1 Disc 1 Wrap Up

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

This week’s TV on DVD Season I am going through and doing wrap ups of is the two part Season 1/Inagural Edition of the Commander in Chief series, which ended up canceled after the first season. Each part has two discs, so I will be posting about one disc each day until this Thursday. I really liked this series and enjoyed going back and rewatching it, as it only lasted long enough to see a few of the episodes more than once as repeats.

Commander in Chief Inaugural Edition Part 1

“Pilot” - The pilot begins with the Vice President Mackenzie Allen being pulled out of a school singing for her in France. She is then told that the President has a brain aneurysm and that he will no longer be able to fulfill the duties of President. They (including the President) want her to resign, as she is an Independent, and they want a Republican to keep the office. In particular they want the Speaker of the House Nathan Templeton to become President by her resigning. She ends up discussing whether to resign or not with her family (twin teenagers, a younger daughter, and her husband who is currently her chief of staff). Her teenage son thinks she should be President, but her teenage daughter shares the political views of the President and feels her mom should resign because her mom does not have the same ideals as the President. When the President comes out of surgery she meets with him and he personally asks her to resign saying he will not resign until she does. It is actually quite an interesting problem, as she was elected by the people as Vice President and there is always a possibility that the Vice President will become President, but at the same time it is not exactly the person and ideas that the people elected, as most voters probably only thought about the first person on the ticket. She is ready to resign, but of course that does not happen or the show would be finished before it even began. As she takes office she begins to take on opposition including resignations and the continuing plots of Templeton to undermine her authority. There is also some interesting scenes with her husband beginning to take on the First Gentleman roles including a lot about how Clinton did the First Lady role bad according to his new assistant. He also has trouble adjusting to his new role that is no longer quite as equal to his wife as before. She ends up addressing Congress near the end of the episode and her teenage daughter refuses to attend and her other daughter ends up spilling juice on her in the limo over to the Capital. During the address the teleprompter soon goes off (possibly caused by Templeton) and she has to recover and do the speech from memory/ad libbing.

March 24, 2009 TV on DVD Releases: Drama

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

Here is this week’s edition for TV on DVD Releases in the drama category.

In Treatment - This release is a 9 disc set of the first 43 episodes in the series that was adapted from the popular Israeli series created by Hagai Levi.

Master of the Game - This release is of a mini series that first aired 25 years ago based on book by Sidney Sheldon. The plot is about the Blackwell family’s rise to wealth in the 1890s in South Africa.

Midsomer Murders: Set 12 - This release contains four mysteries, which are “Four Funerals and a Wedding,” “Country Matters,” “Death in Chorus,” and “Last Year’s Model.” The special features include 50th episode production notes, text interviews with John Nettles and Jason Hughes, Caroline Graham biography, and cast filmographies.

Midsomer Murders: Set 12

The Riches: Season 2 - This release is a two disc set of the series second and final season, as it ended up canceled after season 2.

Room 222: Season 1: This release is of the 1969 teenage drama show that dealt with issues such as prejudice and drugs. The bonus features include “Forty Years On” with interviews with the creators and cast.

Runaway: The Complete Series - The Complete Series also makes things sound impressive, but with this show it is only nine episodes. The interesting thing, though, is that only the first four episodes of this series aired before the CW canceled it. I actually remember this show and enjoyed it, so I plan to at least rent this to see all the episodes they made for the show.

Taggart: Set 1: This is the 19th season of the Scottish police drama that has the longest run for this type of show with it currently in its 25th season.

Time Between Dog and Wolf - This release is of a show (Korean?) about a Korean National Intelligence Service agent going under cover in the Thai underworld.

March 24, 2009 TV on DVD Releases: Animated and Kids

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

Here is this week’s edition for TV on DVD Releases in the animated and kids category.

Aria The Natural Part 2 DVD Collection Season 2 - This release contains episodes 14 through 26 of the series second season (not sure if it means it is the second part of the series or that the first season ended at episode 13 and the second season started at episode 14, but I think it is the later).

Care Bears: Cheer, There & Everywhere - This release contains 8 stories (i.e. half-episodes). It comes with a greeting card.

Sesame Street Presents: Follow That Bird - I know this not an animated show. I do not usually lump the live action kids shows into the animated category and instead put them where they belong such as drama, but I did not know how else to classify this show. This movie is one of the early Sesame Street movies now making what I believe is its premiere on DVD.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars A Galaxy Divided - This release contains four episodes from the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series. The episodes are “Ambush,” “Rising Malevolence,” “Shadow of Malevolence,” and “Destroy Malevolence.” It does not seem like there are any special features on this release.

The Venture Bros.: Season Three - This is a two disc set with the 13 episodes from season 3. It sounds like it may also have some special features. This release is also being released on Blu-Ray the same day and the Blu-Ray version has a bonus music CD. Amazon also has a set of the first three seasons, but it is currently cheaper to buy all three separately.

The Venture Bros.: Season Three

Voltron Volume 7 - This is a three disc set.

Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!: Pirate Treasure - I think this Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! DVD release contains four episodes of the show.

March 24, 2009 TV on DVD Releases: Comedy

Saturday, March 21st, 2009

Here is this week’s edition for TV on DVD Releases in the comedy category.

Andy Richter Controls the Universe: The Complete Series - This release contains all 19 episodes from the shows first and second seasons. The special features include audio commentaries and two featurettes (”How Andy Richter Controlled the Universe” and “What if Andy Richter Controlled the Universe featurette”).

Andy Richter Controls the Universe: The Complete Series

Charles in Charge: Season 4 - This release is of the series 4th season. It is only available as an Amazon made on demand type DVD release. I have heard a lot about people having trouble with these DVDs working in their DVD players, so it might not want to check to see if you can find out if people have had success with the Amazon DVDs and your particular DVD player before purchasing.
