Sabrina the Teenage Witch TV Movie on DVD Review
Friday, March 13th, 2009
I loved the Sabrina the Teenage Witch television show and assumed this movie was like the pilot of the show and thus would be entertaining, too. First of all I do not know much about the comic book series both the movie and show is based on, so I am not sure if either are like the comics or one is more like the comics than the other. What I do know, though, is this movie is very little like what ended up being the television series. Pretty much the only thing that remained the same is that Melissa Joan Hart plays Sabrina and her best friend is the same actor, although I think she has different names in the movie and the series.
The movie has so many differences it is like watching something original, but it is not as good as something original because I know about the show and expected it to be at least as good as the show and kept being disappointed in how plain it seems. The biggest issue is that there is pretty much no comedy and that always seemed to be a big part of the show. Also, the aunts are pretty undeveloped characters in the movie and in the show they ended up being quite complex and part of what made the show interesting. I do not know if the movie is truly bad or I just do not like it because I wanted it to be like the show. It is not even like a pilot to the show, as the show starts right back at it being Sabrina’s 16th birthday just as the movie does.
Overall I do not recommend this movie, especially if you like the TV series and expect this to be similar to it. If you come in with low expectations perhaps it will not seem so bad, but I definitely did not and was quite disappointed. Also, the DVD has absolutely no special features, so that always turns me off from recommending a DVD as purchase worthy vs. rental worthy.
