Doogie Howser, M.D. Season 1 Disc 2 Wrap Up
This week’s TV on DVD Season I am going through and doing wrap ups of is the four disc Doogie Howser, M.D. Season 1 set. I am posting a wrap up of one disc per day finishing the set on Thursday. Today’s wrap up is of the episodes on Disc 2.
“Blood and Remembrance” - In the beginning of this episode Doogie and Wanda break up over a fight about him breaking off a lot of plans for work and her going to the movies with Brian. One of the patients Doogie meets in this episode needs the blood of his wife, who he is currently in the middle of a divorce with. Vinny gets them back to together by sending Wanda roses with a poem supposedly by Doogie, then Doogie tries to help the couple make up by doing the same thing.
“She’s Ain’t Heavy, She’s My Cousin” - Doogie and Wanda set up Vinny with Wanda’s cousin, Yvette, who is a little on the heavy side. Vinny actually turns out to be a pretty good guy that looks beyond the looks of Yvette and treats her with respect like you should treat a human no matter their weight, etc. However, Yvette scares off Vinny because she does not like herself. At the hospital Doogie struggles to understand why a woman would want to have so many surgeries to improve her looks when she already looked fine and had no medical issues.
“My Old Man and the Sea” - Doogie deals with deciding to go to Palm Springs with Wanda’s family on his weekend off or continuing the tradition of spending that weekend on a fishing trip with his dad. He ends up going camping/fishing with his dad, but does not have much enthusiasm about it. This particular episode is kind of boring in my opinion because he does not have much of the hospital drama in it, although they do save a man who fell while they are camping.
“Tonight’s the Night” - In this episode Doogie and Wanda deal with the peer pressure about getting intimate. At the hospital Doogie delivers a baby and gets to know the mother, who is a teenager trying to finish school and raise the baby. The night he is getting ready to have sex with Wanda, the teenager mother drops the baby on Doogie’s doorstep and asks him to watch it for a few days. In the end they decide not to do it and Doogie shares his personal journal with Wanda by letting her watch him write that night’s entry.
“Every Dog has His Doogie” - Doogie deals with the reality that the homeless are turned away in favor of those with insurance/can pay at the hospital. Doogie decides to help a dog by sneaking him into a hospital operating room with some help from others. He ends up suspended over the situation. In the end he gets his job back and gets them to allocate money for taking care of the homeless.
“Doogie the Red Nosed Reindeer” - Doogie is forcefully volunteered to do the night shift on Christmas Eve. Doogie fakes the flu to get out of the extra shift and go to a party. He feels bad for abandoning his colleagues and goes back to help out on Christmas Eve including helping a kid in a car accident and hand out presents.
“Greed is Good” - Doogie is in a game show for geniuses in this episode. At the hospital one of the patients he takes of is a boxer that had a hard break in a supposedly fixed decision in 1957. He ends up purposely losing on the last question because he did not want to deal with the greed of everyone wanting his prizes.
