Smurfs coming to DVD in December
It was bound to happen sooner or later. Those little blue annoyances known as the ‘Smurfs’ are coming to DVD…just in time for Christmas. I’m not a fan, but I know there are lots of Smurf lovers out there. I’m not saying I didn’t watch the show when I was a kid, but I didn’t have cable so my choices were limited. I couldn’t stand Jokey Smurf and Smurfette’s voice grated on my nerves. Even as a young kid, I thought the show was inane and much preferred a good episode of Scooby-Doo. But I digress…
The Smurfs aired new episodes on NBC from 1981 to 1990 and also had a variety of movies and specials during that time. It was all just so…”smurfy”.
The DVD set, brought to you by Warner Home Entertainment, will hit stores on December 4. There is some question as to whether the realease will be a complete first season release or a 19 episode, volume one, first season release. Since the first season was 39 episodes, I am sure Warner will lean toward the later and release the first season in two sets, thereby selling more DVDs. No word yet on special features.
We’ll keep you posted as news becomes available.
