The Best Years Season 1 Disc 2 Wrap Up

by

This week’s TV on DVD Season I am going through and doing wrap ups of is the four disc The Best Years Season 1 set, as sort of a countdown to the premiere of the second season on The N on Friday, April 3, 2009. I will be posting about one disc each day until this Thursday. Today’s wrap up is of disc 2.

The Best Years Season 1

“Secrets and Lies” - Halloween is approaching in this episode. Samantha ends up having to take her floor mate, Cynthia, drunk from the Colony and vouch for her when her parents show up. The owner of the colony (friend of Dawn’s) ends up being in a down mood possibly from a break up and Dawn tries to set him up with Noah, who she thinks might be gay, but at least at this time he does admit to it. Samantha convinces the owner to let her out of her shift to hang with Devon on Halloween at Freak Fest, as it is like the only holiday a orphan can enjoy. She ends up having to choose between telling Cynthia that she cannot go with her to Freak Fest because she is going with Devon and being a bad friend or telling Devon that Cynthia is coming along and being a bad girlfriend. She ends up telling Cynthia to go with Noah. It turns out that Cynthia is an alcoholic and it seems the night at the colony was a relapse. Devon and Samantha go to Freak Fest as Ketchup and Mustard. Cynthia shows up as Relish and messes up their date. The owner of the Colony’s mood ends up being about him being HIV positive. Cynthia gets ready to jump from her dorm room window. Samantha talks her back inside. The show’s drama is good, but the whole second person about to die by falling from the dorm is a little redundant so soon even if it has a different outcome.

“Girl Interrupted” - Samantha drags Devon with her to go see Cynthia in the hospital. Cynthia’s mother ends up blaming Samantha for the incident and tells her to not try to contact Cynthia again. Samantha’s scholarship sponsor offers her home as a place for her to study that is quiet when she finds Samantha studying in a classroom, but she declines. Instead she thinks of using Cynthia’s dorm room. The RA finds her and kicks her out, though. Before that happens she finds an IM about Cynthia’s sister saying their mom cannot be trusted and Samantha wants to find out what the secret is that has so tormented Cynthia. She also ends up taking the offer of using her sponsor’s house to study. She is not supposed have visitors there, but Devon ends up coming over. Noah ends up crushing on his film professor and she seems to be crushing back. The cast of Macbeth walk out because Dawn is getting all the focus. Samantha meets her sponsor’s daughter, Alesia, who ends up warning her that her mother can be evil. Samantha realizes that Cynthia’s secret is that her father sexually abused her. Samantha goes to see Cynthia again and confirms her suspicion about Cynthia and her sister being molested. Samantha sponsor ends up accusing her of stealing.

“Shadow of a Doubt” - Devon wants to do something special for Samantha’s birthday, but she hates the holiday and does not really want to celebrate it. Devon and Samantha end up having sex. Devon and Dawn surprise Samantha with the idea of taking a trip to New York City for her birthday. Patrick, some person from Samantha’s past, shows up at the Colony and she kicks him out. It turns out he is her uncle and he abandoned her when she was 8-years-old. It turns out Patrick abandoned her because he was an alcoholic and only 20 at the time and since then he has been in the Navy and now has a good job and is ready to be an Uncle. Trent, Samantha’s co-worker, thinks something fishy is going on with Patrick, as he knows their is no Navy base in the city Patrick says he was at and Trent thinks he is hiding that he was in prison there. Instead of going to New York there ends up being a surprise party for Samantha. Samantha confronts Patrick about him being in prison. Noah is confused with the romantics going on with his film professor, which ends up leading to them kissing. It turns out Patrick needs a donor (kidney or bone marrow???) and that is why he is trying to get into Samantha’s life. At this time only the viewers know, though, and he has not approached Samantha about it.

“All that Heaven Allows” - Dawn is moping about having told Trent she was a virgin in the previous episode and not wanting to face him, as Samantha tells her that there is an after party for the play opening at the Colony. Samantha freaks out when Devon tells her he loves her and she says nothing back. Noah’s relationship with his film professor continues. Patrick finally confronts Samantha about him dying and that he is hoping her kidney is a match for him. Trent helps her face getting tested to see if she is a match. Devon gets annoyed that Samantha did not call him to go with her to the doctor to get tested. Noah does not go to the play opening and instead invites his professor to his dorm room to have sex. Dawn has a meltdown when she breaks up with Trent. When Samantha goes to talk to Trent, Trent ends up kissing her and revealing he likes her. As Dawn rages out of the Colony she gets hit by a car. Dawn ends up with a broken leg and bruises on one side of her. Devon returns to the dorm to find Noah still with the film professor. Noah thinks it is over with the professor, but instead she just says they should do it elsewhere next time. Samantha ends up not being a match for Patrick and the doctor says it is impossible they are even related. In the end Samantha finally tells Devon she loves him.
